Our History & Legacy
The Lebanon Internet Exchange Point traces its roots to the Beirut Internet Exchange (BIX), which was established in December 2007 as the country’s first IXP. BIX was launched with support from local and international partners to create a neutral peering hub in Beirut. For years, BIX operated as a basic exchange where a handful of Lebanese ISPs interconnected their networks. This pioneering effort proved the value of local peering, but the exchange remained limited in scale and technology over time.
LEB-IX was established in 2019 as a neutral, non-profit Internet Exchange Point, evolving from the Beirut Internet Exchange (BIX) to provide a more transparent, resilient, and community-driven interconnection platform for Lebanon. Building on the legacy of BIX, LEB-IX combines modern infrastructure, broader participation, and strengthened governance to support the continued growth of the Lebanese Internet ecosystem.
The Exchange Point continues its mission through LEB-IX as a national initiative working to strengthen Lebanon’s Internet ecosystem through improved connectivity, local peering, and resilient infrastructure. Under LEB-IX, membership has expanded to include not only ISPs but also universities, content distribution networks (CDNs), government networks, and other enterprises. The exchange has grown in capacity and traffic, recently surpassing 15 Gbps in peak traffic and connecting dozens of networks, a significant milestone for Lebanon’s internet development.
Governance & Operations
The exchange is overseen by a multi-stakeholder governance committee with representatives elected from our member organizations to guarantee that LEB-IX is managed transparently andindependently of any single entity.
We provide a neutral and open platform; peering is entirely voluntary, and we do not interfere in the private peering agreements or business relationships between our members
We operate strictly not-for-profit, where any minimal fees are decided by member consensus and used purely to cover operational costs
Our day-to-day operations, traffic monitoring, and member support are handled by a dedicated Network Operations Center (NOC) team
